CSI Model

23 May 2007

Tuesday 22 May 2007 saw the University of Ulster, Coleraine as the (crime) scene for this year’s Salters’ Chemistry Challenge. 27 schools from across the province took part in the competition designed to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young.

The challenge involved the girls becoming CSI agents and investigating a murder. They used analytical techniques to determine who the murderer was by identifying the metal and non-metal parts of white powders found at the crime scene. They then matched these with the results from powders found on the suspects.

The Girls Model team was made up of year 8 pupils Honor McQuillan, Rebecca Rankin and Tammy-Lee Scott. They correctly identified the two murderers, justifying their reasons for choosing them and in doing so the girls won first place.

Each of the girls received a goodie pack and the school was presented with £100 to be used by the science department.
