What is wellbeing?

Wellbeing is about feeling healthy, happy, and confident in yourself, while also being able to cope with the everyday challenges that life brings. For teenage girls, wellbeing is not about being perfect or feeling positive all the time. It is about understanding your emotions, looking after your physical health, building self-esteem, and knowing when to ask for support. Good wellbeing helps you enjoy school, maintain friendships, achieve your goals, and develop a positive sense of who you are.

Wellbeing can be supported in many different ways, including getting enough sleep, staying active, eating well, spending time with people who make you feel valued, and taking breaks from social media when needed. It is also important to remember that everyone experiences difficult days, and feeling stressed, worried, or upset from time to time is completely normal. By practising self-care, being kind to yourself, and reaching out for help when you need it, you can build resilience and develop the confidence to thrive both now and in the future.

Take 5 - Steps to Wellbeing

Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing is a mental health and wellbeing campaign promoted across Northern Ireland by the

Public Health Agency (PHA). It encourages people of all ages to practise five simple actions that can help improve and maintain positive mental health and emotional wellbeing. The five steps are Connect, Keep Learning, Be Active, Take Notice, and Give. Research shows that regularly incorporating these actions into daily life can help people feel happier, more resilient, and better able to cope with life's challenges.

For teenagers, Take 5 is a practical reminder that small everyday choices can have a positive impact on wellbeing. Connect by spending time with friends and family, Keep Learning by trying new skills or hobbies, Be Active through sport, dance, walking, or exercise, Take Notice by paying attention to the world around you and practising mindfulness, and Give by helping others, volunteering, or showing kindness. These simple habits can build confidence, strengthen relationships, reduce stress, and support good mental health both in and out of school.
